days 4 and 5 07/27/2007

Well, yesterday my assignment was to give myself some credit.  I guess people with weight issues are inherintly hard on themselves. It seems a little juvenile and frankly hard to remember to do. But that's why I am instructed to make notes and cards and repeat, repeat, repeat.

Day 5 is today and I have been assigned to task of eating slowly and mindfully. Wish me luck.

So yesterday I typed out the plan of the Beck Diet Solution.  I looked at my sight and couldn't find it. So I reset it and hope fully it shows up. Yesterday was a long post.

Day 3 my commitment was to sit eating down for every bite. It is not easy. Dr Beck explains that all calories count even the ones you eat standing in front of the TV in the kitchen or all of the free samples at the grocery store. It's amazing how much I actually do this.  It is hard not to take a bite from my kids' plates as I clear them. I guess most people who follow her program find this step crucial to their weight loss.  More later.

Ok, so I went on vacation to the beautiful Thousand Islands region of NY. We go every year. And what happened was the same as what happens every vaca and weekends most of the time. I went off of my diet. I waited til the last minute before I left for the postman to bring my book I ordered. However, my mail was being held and I missed it. When I returned home I got it and it is really a wonderful supplement to my weight loss journey.

The book is called The Beck Diet Solution by Judith Beck. Her father invented cognitive therapy which has been used to help train people's minds with various behavioral problems such as, depression, anxiety, etc.  Well, his daughter has been doing research for 20 years on weight loss and cognitive therapy and in May came out with the book. I had seen her interviewed on TV and was very interested in this. It does make a lot of sense. How can you lose weight and keep it off if you constantly have thoughts of food.

This program is six weeks long. It works with any diet and you get a new task every day to train your brain to think like a thin person. The first part of the book she talks about the differences between the way an overweight person thinks and a thin person. She says, an overweight person will eat because they tend to look at hunger as an emergency situation rather than a biological function that can be remedied by the next meal or snack. Overweight people have a fear of hunger and will eat to prevent hunger later on. Interesting...

She requested you not  start a diet until week 2 so you are mentally prepared. Preventing failure is her number one concern.

So yesterday was Day one. I bought a notebook, 3x5 index cards, and post it notes as per her request.

I had to write down the Advantages of Losing Weight on a 3x5 card.  Here are mine

-Make my kids proud
-Increase self esteem
-Increase energy levels
-Become healthy
-Not be embarrassed to go to the Dr
-Feel confident
-Be a good role model for my kids
-Look good
-Better sex/sex drive
-Make myself proud

I made copies of it and wrote down a commitment to read it at least 2 times a day.

Today was day 2

My goal today was to pick a diet and a back up diet, ah, interesting... Why 2 diets? As I wrote before she wants to avoid failing. Some diets work for some people and don't for others.

My written commitment today was that I picked a primary and back up diet that are both reasonable and nutritious.

First diet is Weight Watchers
Back up diet is USDA Food Pyramid Diet

Tomorrow, I commit to eat sitting down!

Later,
Lauren

Thanks Melody for your support. I am going on vacation next week and will be gone for a week. I plan on reading that book so I'll let you know it's highlights. This am weigh in at 219lbs.

Well, we had a big family picnic here for my son who turned 5. I lost 2 lbs the day before the party then. Lots of people and food. I didn't eat anything pretty much all day until dinner and then I gained 4 lbs. But this morning I was down today to 221lbs.

The weekend always messes me up. I'll get it right eventually.

long day 07/05/2007

I realized today I can zone out in front of the TV and eat. While I'm in the kitchen mainly. Having to count my points makes me realize how much I really eat normally.  I got an electric points calculator today. I also ordered this book called Thin
Thinking, or something like that. It's written by he daughter of the man who created cognitive behavioral therapy.  I think it will be an interesting book. The author said you can apply to any diet.

Anyway, I'm getting ready for a big family picnic on Sat for my son's bday.  I'll have to look up the points and portions ahead of time.  I'm tired. I'm going to bed. Goodnight.

2 more 07/04/2007

Morning weigh in 220.7 lbs. Ok so it's actually 1.5 lbs. But it still counts. As each day or even half day goes by I feel more and more confident with what I'm doing. I really want to be a role model for my kids and I can do it! Later.

2nd day pm 07/03/2007

It was a long hard day. My first born turned 5 and plenty of temptations especially because it's a holiday the next day. I drank a couple of beers w/ my hubby at our campfire and had to use 4 flex pts. I feel positive about it tho. No overindulgences. Peace out dudes!

2 lbs down 07/03/2007

Well, morning weigh in I was down to 222 lbs. I have so used to eating no carb/low carb or fasting that I was hoping to lose more. But, I can eat carbs and am doing this in a healthy way. Tomorrow I have to figure a goal weight.

Day one down 07/02/2007

Morning weigh in 224 lbs.  Well, I did it. I went over by one point.  So, I have to use one of my flex points. I can't believe drank that much water!  I took a walk after dinner and I feel great that the first day is over. Over and out.
